Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy

There are many myths surrounding hypnosis. Most have started around stage shows and theatrical events where a hypnotists gets people to bark like a dog or other such event. While these are real events and those people are hypnotized, they are not doing anything against their will. Those people don't really care about barking like a dog. They might care about other events such as removing their clothes or hurting some one else. Generally speaking if they do not want to do it, it will not happen. For that very same reason, there is incredible power in hypnosis. Imagine doing all the things you really want to do, but didn't have the courage, will power, motivation or determination to do. Hypnosis allows you to tap that desire within yourself so you can accomplish things that you were unable to do. It has limitations to the point that you can't do something that is outside of your physical ability to do. If you have never played Baseball before, it will not make you a Baseball player. It can however give you the added courage to learn if that was something that you had some fear or trepidation about. If you are already a Baseball player, it can give you added motivation or otherwise enhance your level of playing by tapping into your inner strength and allow you to leave your weaknesses behind.

This leads us into another major benefit of hypnosis, removing fear and phobias. If you sat down and reflected for a moment about all those things that you didn't do because some fear came up, you might come up with quite a few once you stopped counting. This is also where the skill of the hypnotherapist comes in. Understanding behavior and problem solving become key elements.

This brings up a second major issue or myth. It doesn't work. Many people undergo hypnosis from some one who learned hypnosis in a few weekends. Learning to hypnotize someone is the actually the easy part, understanding their issues and coming up with new programming is not. Programming needs to be user specific based on how that individual thinks and takes in information. Problems are often much more complex than they appear to be. When someone enters into hypnotherapy, there is a presenting problem. The presenting problem is something that you are able to identify. In many cases there is some other underlying cause that is the real issue. The presenting problem is just the symptom of that issue.

Hypnosis can also be looked at from the standpoint of what it isn't. Hypnotherapists do not treat mental illnesses or medical conditions without first getting a professional referral from a medical doctor or State licensed therapist. Hypnosis can be used in conjunction with these professionals to alleviate symptoms, pain management and similar maladies. It may also help get to the core of some illnesses that have no explanation. Psychosomatic illnesses and hysterical conversions take place when an individual believes their self into being sick. Hypnosis can be used with individuals in these cases in conjunction with and by a referral from a medical doctor or licensed therapist.
